A circular is a single instruction on a narrow point. A Master Circular bundled a year of circulars on one subject and was historically re-issued each 1 July. A Master Direction is the RBI’s consolidated, living rulebook on a subject — updated continuously as amending circulars are issued, rather than re-published annually. Over recent years the RBI has moved decisively from annual Master Circulars towards living Master Directions, so the single most reliable thing a compliance team can do is read the consolidated Master Direction for the subject rather than chase the underlying circulars. BankPulse’s crosswalk maps every tracked circular to its parent Master Direction family so you always reach the consolidated official source.
The April 2026 RBI consolidation wave — old circulars mapped to new Master Directions
Quick answerThe RBI is steadily replacing scattered circulars and annually re-issued Master Circulars with living Master Directions — single, continuously updated rulebooks per subject. Around the 1 April 2026 financial-year start, several of these consolidated rulebooks were current or refreshed. This hub maps each regulatory area to its consolidated Master Direction and to the BankPulse family map, with the official rbi.org.in source on every row. We link to RBI; we never reproduce RBI text, and we assert no contested figure or date here.

Accuracy note. The RBI updates its living Master Directions on an ongoing basis and brings consolidations into effect at various dates — many at the 1 April start of a financial year. This hub maps the structure of that consolidation; it does not assert any specific notification number, effective date or figure. Exact references, tier thresholds and dates can change — always confirm them on the linked official rbi.org.in page. Specific contested figures are held under reviewer (Vikram Jain) confirmation and are not stated here.
